NOTE:  Candidates must be willing and able to train on 1st Shift for several months before transitioning to 2nd Shift

Job Summary & Essential Functions:  The following describes in general terms the purpose and scope of the position. 

The Machinist Helper performs ancillary support tasks required in the normal course of work being processed in the Machine Cell. The Machinist Assistant may perform prep work as well as follow-up activities that facilitate work flow. The Machinist Assistant learns to operate conventional, special purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines under close supervision of an experienced tradesman. 

•      Ability to locate detail from engineering drawings, including determination of correct blank size.

•      Performs administrative tasks as required in the cell with the use of a PC and MS office software.

•      Demonstrates vertical and horizontal band saw skills.

•      Deburs rough cut stock or final work pieces as needed.

•      Provides physical assistance to Machinists, Toolmakers, and cell operators as may be required.

•      Ability to read basic blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances.

•      Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining.

•      Verifies conformance of work piece to specifications.

•      Performs regular preventive maintenance on machines assigned.

•      Confers with cell staff to resolve production questions.

•      Review and understand SOPs.

•      Understands the principles of DAS NY 6S Program.

•      Uses precision measuring tools, including but not limited to, micrometers, height gages, pin gages and protractors.

•      Understands and practices basic machine tool / shop safety.

•      Uses BAAN wedge barcode to scan jobs in and out of setup and run.

•      Responsible for the proper handling and management of hazardous waste generated in their work area.

•      Must be willing and able to work overtime as necessary.

•      Acceptable attendance is an essential function of the position.

•      Performs other duties as assigned or required by the position.

•      Strong mechanical aptitude required.

•      Ability to read and understands shop work orders (travelers).

•      Read and understand internal procedures and policies.

•      Understand and follow through on both verbal and written instructions.

•      Team oriented with a continuous improvement and quality outlook.

•      Computer Skills - able to learn and navigate new screens, reports, functions, software programs and internal ERP systems.

•      Must be able to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.

•      Communicates courteously and professionally at all organizational levels.

•      Basic math skills are vital:  Simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, understanding the decimal system and adding and subtracting fractions is required.

•      Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written and oral form.

•      Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions and SOPs.

•      Reads and demonstrates an understanding of F-SOP-180.

•      Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

•      Must be able to communicate effectively.

•      Annual baseline hearing test is required.

•      Frequently required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.

•      Occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, or crouch.

•      Must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Required Experience/Education/Training/Certifications:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess the outlined experience level, education, training, minimum years of experience, product or industry knowledge plus any certifications in order to be considered. 

•      High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

•      Basic computer skills – email, information search, Microsoft Office preferred.

Work Environment and Safety Equipment Required: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job.  Safety glasses, safety shoes and other designated personal protective equipment as required for the position. 

•      Working conditions are:  100% manufacturing environment.

•      Regularly required to work near moving mechanical parts.

•      Regularly exposed to fumes, wet and/or humid conditions and airborne particles.

•      Occasionally exposed to extreme heat. 

•      Noise level is usually loud.

•      Hearing protection is required.

•      Safety glasses (ANSI Z87 compliant) required in all manufacturing areas.

•      ANSI approved, fully enclosed leather construction safety shoes (ANSI Z-41 compliant), that fit at the ankle or higher, must be worn.

Skills & Qualifications

•      High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

•      Basic computer skills – email, information search, Microsoft Office preferred

•      Strong mechanical aptitude required.
