Job Description

The Manager, Operational Excellence & Quality is responsible for the maintenance, development and administration of all quality assurance systems of the company with a focus on operational excellence.  This position manages Continuous Improvement (CI) activities at the Ducommun Carson facility and reports directly to the performance center director. Key activities include kaizen event facilitation, CI process standardization, lean tool application, change management, and providing training in those areas. The position also oversees all quality aspects of the performance center, which are critical to the day-to-day functioning of the company.

  • Manages the quality assurance, quality control, quality improvement functions.

  • Ensures that LSS principles and concepts are applied throughout the performance center.  These include, but are not limited to, Current State and Future State Value Stream Mapping, Cellular Manufacturing, Kanban, Pull Systems, SMED or Quick Changeover, Design for Lean, One Piece Flow, Waste Removal, Visual Controls, OEE, Standard Work, Pareto, ABC Analysis, Rule-in/Rule-out RCA, 5 Whys, 80/20, DOE, DMAIC, A3, 6S, and Poke-Yoke.

  • Actively promotes a culture that embraces change.

  • Responsible for the development, maintenance, evaluation  and sustainment ,of the quality system including but not limited to the quality manual in accordance with AS9100, NADCAP, customer audits, internal audits and other customer quality documents.

  • Supports and encourages empowerment of all employees to contribute to improvements.

  • Drives the understanding and training for quality concepts and methods throughout the company.

  • Identifies and prioritizes opportunities through data analysis using our ERP system and other data sources.

  • Supports the values of the company.

  • Key member of the management team.

  • Supports the Carsons’ team and customers both internal and external through the development of our Lean and QA systems, team members and available resources.

  • Supports shop floor personnel, team leaders, managers, and others in development of action driving metrics.

  • Maintains a high energy level and positive attitude

  • Decision authority for quality issues

  • Coordinates QMAT Process Improvements

  • Responsible for the proper handling and management of hazardous waste generated in their work area.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Knowledge of aerospace company specifications and practices, particularly Boeing.
  • Computer knowledge and skills, i.e. MS Word and Excel.
  • Proficiency in ERP systems, Minitab, MS Access desirable.
  • Strong quantitative, analytical and process thinking capability.
  • Ability to lead a group of people in a constructive, productive and fair manner.
  • Ability to manage numerous projects and meet deadlines as required.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and mylars.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills.
  • Ability to drive root cause analyses to ensure future success of the Organization.
  • Interact with all levels of personnel, customers and vendors.
  • Read and understand internal procedures and policies.
  • Overtime and weekend work as needed to support manufacturing.
  • Overnight travel as needed to support customer and manufacturing.
  • Ability to keep confidential information confidential.
  • Team oriented with a continuous improvement outlook.

Required Experience/Education/Training/Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field required; Six Sigma Greenbelt and/or Lean Certifications desirable.
  • 5+ years’ experience as quality engineer in an aerospace manufacturing environment.
  • Experience participating in kaizen events and managing projects is required.
  • Experience with ISO or derivative quality systems preferred.
