Position Summary
The Buyer/Planner is primarily responsible for managing the near-term planning for the facility to meet weekly shipments and realize sales goals. The Buyer/Planner will be responsible for managing and addressing issues preventing the execution of the Master Production Schedule (MPS) and the production plan to ensure on-time shipments according to customer requirements. The Buyer/Planner is responsible for procurement functions directly associated with the company’s needs for in-process materials and services. Additionally, the position requires that consumables, raw materials, shop services, fixed assets and tooling are acquired at reasonable costs and with timely delivery. The position is further responsible for the planning and scheduling of receipt and inventory control of the products and services as assigned consistent with MagSeal and AS9100 and ISO requirements. The Buyer/Planner will find and qualify potential suppliers, negotiate prices and terms, and execute agreements for purchases of outside services with Engineering. The Buyer/Planner to maintain relationships with our suppliers to ensure that materials are delivered in line with the demand as it fluctuates within the while managing and maintaining appropriate inventory to avoid waste keeping costs down. They will also be key for aligning support of various functions to aid in managing exceptions to the MPS. This opportunity will be located onsite at the Warren, Rhode Island location.
Essential Functions:
- Maintain and coordinate the Master Production Schedule (MPS) and production plan in coordination with the Operations production team.
- Manage issues preventing execution of the MPS and production plan. Issues include but are not limited to, non-conforming materials or processes, material or equipment availability.
- Plan materials requirements and place purchase orders from outside suppliers to support production schedules and new product launches, with increased complexity and volume.
- Negotiate pricing and delivery.
- Work with the supplier to ensure materials are made to the proper specifications.
- Surface issues to Operations management when capacity plans are challenged to meet shipment goals.
- Utilize the ERP to optimize workflow, schedule planning and procurement.
- Manage workflow progress, including working with production and other supporting departments to ensure production plans are met.
- Create and process purchase orders to vendors in a timely manner as to allow for the production schedule to be met according to the demands of production.
- Manage inter-vendor material transfers and material flows.
- Expedite purchase orders as required.
- Establish and maintain gross inventory targets. Includes developing action plans to minimize inventory exposure and for scrapping or mitigating excess and obsolete parts based on business information.
- Identify, plan and execute cost reduction initiatives.
- Interviews and confers with current and prospective suppliers to determine supply capabilities, transportation logistics, inventory control and management.
- Effectively manage and communicate to Vendors, our requirements.
- Interface professionally with engineering, manufacturing and quality departments.
- Provide ongoing progress updates of new vendors through key metrics.
- KPI’s to include % of Realized savings, procurement costs, supplier performance, Risk analysis of supply disruption, source management and other organizational, tactical and strategic metrics.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Associates Degree in Business, Supply Chain, Operations Planning or a related field preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training and experience totaling at least three (3) years.
- Two (2) years of experience using an ERP system in a Buyer/Planner capacity required.
- Working knowledge of the metals industry, products and materials preferred.
- Computer skills to include Microsoft office, time management software such as Outlook for effective time management.
- Strong communication skills (verbal & written), able to collaborate within the team and present information.
- Strong problem solving skills that will prevent problems before they occur and minimize impact to production.
- Demonstrate honesty, integrity, and conduct that conforms to MagSeal values and culture.
- Possess self-motivation, drive and takes initiative to achieve target assignments.
- Highly responsible, detail oriented individual with ability to make and meet deadlines.
- Strong negotiation skills along with good management / financial / business acumen.
- Must be a US Citizen or a US permanent resident.
- Excellent organizational, time management and training skills.
Work Environment
This position operates in both a professional office environment and on the manufacturing floor. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and scanners.
Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, typing and data entry. This position is required to lift and carry up to 25 lbs occasionally and push/pull up to 10 lbs. occasionally. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to wear required Personal Protective Equipment as required.
