Job Description

Job Summary & Essential Functions:  The following describes in general terms the purpose and scope of the position. 

Sets up and operates 5 axis computer-numerical control (CNC) machine to cut and fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts. 

•      Learns to perform basic machine setups.

•      Performs accurate reporting of labor; navigates the Baan ERP system.

•      Familiar with basic machine maintenance and pre-operations inspections.

•      Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.

•      Verifies conformance of finished work piece to specifications.

•      Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and references points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent cutting.

•      Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machine.

•      Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, rotation of program, and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.

•      Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance cutting, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.

•      Sets up and operates machine/tools on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.

•      Indicates X and Y and adjusts indication as necessary.

•      Makes feed rate adjustments.

•      Performs machine observations of high pressure components for safety issues.

•      Identifies quality issues.

•      Uploads and downloads programs into the controller.

•      Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining problems.

•      Understanding of cutting speeds, garnet types and water pressure.

•      Basic understanding of theory and applications of G and M codes.

•      Calibrates equipment.

•      Performs TPM.

•      Cycles parts through Waterjet cutting machines.

•      Performs clean-up and maintenance tasks.

•      Understanding of customer specifications as they relate to the operation being performed.

•      Thorough understanding of quality procedures and how to reference and apply them.

•      Reads and understands F-SOP-150-180.

•      Reads and follows Standard Operating Procedures (Op Sheets).

•      Possesses basic hand trim skills and the ability to ream holes and trim tabs.

•      Demonstrates basic high-pressure safety skills.

•      Operates forklift.

•      Understands and practices the principles of the Ducommun 6-S Program.

•      Responsible for the proper handling and management of hazardous waste generated in their work area.

•      Must be willing and able to work overtime as necessary.

•      Acceptable attendance is an essential function of the position.

•      Performs other duties as assigned or required by the position.

•      High School diploma or equivalent required.

•      Strong mechanical aptitude.

•      Math Skills – decimals, percentages, fractions, geometry and basic understanding of Polar and Cartesian Coordinate Systems preferred.

•      Ability to read and interpret blueprints.

•      Ability to use precision measuring instruments including but not limited to calipers, indicators, and scales.

•      Ability to operate overhead crane and/or hoist.

•      Trained and certified to operate forklift – annual certification.

•      Reads and understands internal procedures and policies.

•      Understands and follows through on both verbal and written instructions.

•      Team oriented with a continuous improvement outlook.

•      Basic Computer Skills - able to learn new screens, reports, functions and simple software programs with assistance.



•      Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

•      Frequently required to walk; use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.

•      Must be able to communicate effectively.

•      Annual baseline hearing test is required.



•      Occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel, or crouch.

•      Must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. 

Required Experience/Education/Training/Certifications:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess the outlined experience level, education, training, minimum years of experience, product or industry knowledge plus any certifications in order to be considered. 



•      High School diploma or equivalent required.

•      Strong mechanical aptitude.

•      Math Skills – decimals, percentages, fractions, geometry and basic understanding of Polar and Cartesian Coordinate Systems preferred.

•      Basic Computer Skills - able to learn new screens, reports, functions and simple software programs with assistance.

•      Trained and certified to operate forklift – annual certification.

Work Environment and Safety Equipment Required: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job.  Safety glasses, safety shoes and other designated personal protective equipment as required for the position. 

•      Working conditions are:  100% manufacturing environment.

•      Regularly required to work near moving mechanical parts.

•      Regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and airborne particles.

•      Noise level is usually loud.

•      Hearing protection is required.

•      Safety glasses (ANSI Z87 compliant) required in all manufacturing areas.

•      Fully enclosed shoes of solid, leather construction with a steel or composite toe cap (ANSI Z41 compliant) must be worn in all manufacturing areas.
