Job Description

The Director of Tax is responsible for all of Ducommun’s Tax Reporting and Compliance, as well as the related financial initiatives and planning that impact the current businesses and future growth drivers, such as M & A activities. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer, she or he will be a key member of the Finance team. This role will be critical to the company’s corporate tax strategies, as well as, the continued development and process improvement around the Tax Planning and Reporting function.

 In this leadership role, this proficient tax executive will assertively interact with the senior leadership and finance team as well as act as the liaison with the various levels of management and finance staff throughout the organization; communicating and coordinating the flow of information amongst the various businesses and functions; energetically championing innovative, effective and practical tax solutions.

The Director of Tax will be responsible for these functional disciplines: Planning and managing corporate tax policy and procedures; Overseeing, developing and directing the activities and performance of this function; Serving as the in-house technical tax expert; Monitoring of related industry issues and legislative proposals; Communicating with external audit and tax firms; and, Ensuring overall tax reporting accuracy and completeness for the company. Specifically this executive will be accountable for:

  • Interfacing with the corporate controller and interact with the finance team; proactively advising and guiding on all tax related matters;
  • Providing forecasts of effective tax rates and ETR guidance to FP&A/Controller/CFO for purposes of EPS and cash-flow projections;
  • Filing of Financial statements and all associated tax disclosures required for the SEC quarterly (10-Q) and annually (10-K) reporting;
  • Interfacing and communicating with external auditors regarding tax accounting, disclosure and overall financial reporting controls associated with tax; evaluating financial statement treatment and disclosures for taxes.
  • Reviewing all tax planning for the business to determine appropriate measure of uncertain tax position liability to establish on the balance sheet;
  • Coordinating information and reviewing the preparation of the Company's tax provision including detailed schedules of deferred tax assets and liabilities, and income taxes payable/receivable.   • Leading the preparation of the Company’s annual Research and Development Tax Credit Study and other tax related projects as identified;
  • Maintain and register business licenses in all jurisdictions; preparing and maintaining income tax provisions and estimated tax payments for all entities and jurisdictions;
  • Leading and coordinating all federal and state income tax audits, state property and usage tax;
  •  Reviewing all special projects and other significant initiatives, especially M&A, for proper accounting and income tax treatment; along with tax planning compliance issues; and,
  • Keeping current on all related tax technology and data accuracy; having a working knowledge of automated tax software packages and maintaining accuracy of corporate asset depreciation.

  • Possesses the balance of business acumen and leadership experience along with solid technical expertise and knowledge; providing clear, direct and accurate communications, both verbally and written.
  • Unquestionable integrity; clear understanding of confidentiality and privacy of company information
  • Understands how to act as a generalist and a specialist; having a working knowledge of tax related subjects, process and procedures, such as; process improvement techniques, income tax provisions, cash tax forecasting, domestic production activities deductions, state and local tax, tangible property regulations, deferred tax computations, transfer pricing and Sarbanes-Oxley processes.
  • Likely the executive profile, business background and the combined experience, whether in public account or corporate operations, will reflect an understanding of multi products, heavy manufacturing and assembly organization(s). Their career will show an exposure to cultures and working environments that are characterized as multi level workforce; multi facilities consisting of 15 to 20 plant locations, that include some international sites; a B2B matrix organization business model; and, business revenues of over $600M.

Technical Qualifications:

  • Technical expertise in tax accounting matters, demonstrated by minimum ten (10) years of relevant tax experience; preparing and reviewing US GAAP income tax provisions and state & federal tax returns.
  • Ability to comprehend and address technical matters; supporting positions taken based on tax knowledge and application of applicable accounting standards to the relevant facts and circumstances is required.
  • Experience in US corporate tax compliance, United States state taxation and tax audits; and a strong working understanding of financial statements is required.
  • Prior experience using sophisticated tax-provisioning software and 10 plus years of experience in tax provisioning interaction between outside auditors and in-house team.

Specific technical skills, working knowledge and process experience, such as US GAAP audits, can be achieved either from a professional services career in public accounting/CPA firm or directly from the business and industry sector.

Education Credentials: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting is required.
  • Active CPA is required
  • Master's degree in Taxation strongly preferred
