The Intern position is an opportunity for a Chemistry/Engineering student to gain real world experience in an aerospace manufacturing environment, while concurrently providing benefit to Ducommun by performing a variety of tasks in either the Lab or Engineering areas.  Job duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • The Intern may be responsible for reading and interpreting customers:  contracts, purchase orders, electronic or hard copy drawings, and specifications. 

  • Through the evaluation of this data, the Intern may create, documents, drawings, and processes for the purpose of meeting customer requirements. 

  • As necessary, the Intern may also be expected to support the lab testing of etchants used in manufacturing aerospace hardware. 

  • The Intern is expected to work cooperatively as a member of an Integrated Product Team (IPT) that includes Engineering, Quality, and laboratory technicians.

  • Proficient skills creating and manipulating spreadsheet packages; Excel preferred but will train.

  • Basic knowledge of chemistry is required.

  • Plan manufacturing operations to facilitate production of sheet metal parts

  • Write detailed Statement of Work (SOW) that accurately defines the activities to be performed by lab.

  • Assist in writing detailed work instructions to accomplish job in a safe and satisfactory manner.

  • Assist in developing Standard Operating Procedures utilizing drawings and specifications as well as interviews with facility personnel.

  • Participate in improvement activities with Manufacturing Engineer and Work Center Managers to support manufacturing operations.Data collection and
    analysis for continuous improvement of production processes.

  • Propose process changes to improve quality and/or throughput.Must be willing and able to work overtime as necessary.

  • Acceptable attendance is an essential function of the position.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or required by the position.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret scientific and technical data, blueprints, specifications, etc.

  • Ability to effectively present information to peers and management.

  • Ability to apply advanced mathematical and statistical concepts.

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form.

  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. 

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel

  • Must be able to communicate effectively.

  • The employee frequently is required to stand; the employee is occasionally required to walk and sit. 

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

  • Must be able to occasionally move and/or lift from up to 25 pounds

  • Current enrollment as an Engineering student – Mechanical, Aerospace, Systems or Process focus desired.
