Job Description

The individual is responsible for supporting all manufacturing processes in the plant and key suppliers. Supports the transition of new product from design engineering to manufacturing, including the development of the PFMEA; mistake proofing key process characteristics; verifies machine/equipment capability; and validates effectiveness of dies, tooling, and fixtures. Develops process improvements, provides improvement suggestions to design engineers on jigs, fixtures, dies, and related tooling, troubleshoots machine/product related issues and implements lean manufacturing and/or six sigma principles. Conducts root cause analysis and drives long-term corrective actions.  Manages aircraft composite and metal bond assembly projects of medium to higher technical complexity. Applies engineering principles to optimize tooling, develop standard work instructions, and establish manufacturing processes for assigned hardware programs. Ensures performance, cost, schedule, and quality requirements are met within the IPT.  Implements lean and six sigma principles and practices to optimize manufacturing efficiencies.

  • Develop standardized work instructions, implement SS, balance lines, create process flow and linkage, develop pull systems, lead Kaizen Events and remove non-value added activities from the manufacturing process

  • Develops standard operating procedures for both fabrication and assembly processes

  • Provides guidance to supervisors, leads and operators regarding process improvements

  • Improves tooling/fixtures for fabrication and assembly to remove non-value added activity, to reduce set up times, to improve quality and to reduce scrap

  • "Hands On" participation on the shop floor for problem solving and developing both corrective actions and developing proper methodologies to solve problems

  • Analyzes and evaluates engineering designs to ensure product considerations are incorporated

  • Evaluates, develops and organizes manufacturing plans, defining processes, procedures, bill of material and requirements for the manufacturing phases of a program

  • Administers the implementation of the manufacturing and tooling plans to assure compliance by all affected departments

  • Originates and / or proposes new and improved tooling designs, materials, manufacturing equipment and methods to simplify and / or improve existing manufacturing methods

  • Participates in new business proposal analysis; determines tooling and manufacturing requirements, assist in the development of cost estimates

  • Resolves complex problems involving tooling, parts manufacturing and machining, and equipment utilization and production techniques. 

  • Utilize engineering designs, electronic databases, CAD/CAM systems, program scheduling software to perform analysis of manufacturing methods, processes and techniques required to develop and administer the overall manufacturing philosophy for major programs

  • Establish manufacturing philosophy, process flow, procedures and requirements for all phases of manufacturing to meet cost, quality, and performance and schedule requirements.

  • Provide project leadership and being able to anticipate and resolve conflict

Skills & Qualifications

•         Knowledge of aerospace company specifications and best-practices

•         Significant background in problem solving including CNC Machining and other fabrication processes

•         Strong analytical and communication skills

•         Ability to read and interpret blueprints and mylars

•         Ability to drive root cause analysis

  • Team oriented with a continuous improvement outlook
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.)

•         Background in Lean and/or Six Sigma principles including Process Mapping, SS, DMAIC, Cellular Manufacturing, FMEA, Pull Systems and Continuous Improvement Events such as Kaizen or Six Sigma Projects

•         Overtime and weekend work as needed to support manufacturing

•         Minimum eight (8) years’ experience in an aerospace manufacturing environment

•         BS or BA in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Technology or technical equivalent
