Sr. Benefits Specialist

Job Description

Job Summary & Essential Functions: Administers all company benefits programs, policies and procedures.  Ensures compliance and provides subject matter expertise to business partners.     

Essential Functions:

  • Ensures plans, programs, and processes are administered consistent with company policies and applicable federal and state laws; maintains professional knowledge and awareness of legislative updates

    • Provides guidance, expertise, and recommendations to HR and other business partners on all benefit related matters, including leave of absence, FMLA, and ADA; interfaces with multiple levels within the organization

    • Manages 401k and pension plans; responsible for compliance, audits, and general administration

    • Manages vendors relationships, including service providers, consultants, and third party carriers

    • Leads  company wellness initiatives; recommends program design; develops programs, communications, and announcements

    • Ensures PPACA compliance, including audits and tracking, required employee notices, W-2 and 1095 disclosures, applicable agency responses, as well as required filings and fees

  • Proactively identifies and implements new tools and process improvements to address changing business needs

  • Leads benefit projects and initiatives aimed at improving employee services

  • Maintains and updates standard work procedures and documentation for department

  • Manages the annual benefits enrollment process (Jan 1 and March 1)

  • Responsible for accurate and timely payment of benefit invoices

  • Responsible for the proper handling and management of hazardous waste generated in work area.

  • Performs other duties as assigned including participation in department projects and/or committees

Skills & Qualifications

Required Skills & Qualifications: 

  • Strong knowledge of benefits programs: health, welfare, retirement, leave of absence, wellness programs

  • Strong project management skills; ability to manage multiple projects concurrently

  • Ability to lead teams and projects

  • Experience with HRIS systems; ADP Enterprise and Health & Welfare preferred

  • Experience running and manipulating reports from HRIS system

  • Critical thinking skills and good decision making thought processes

  • Understanding and application of benefits laws and legislation

  • Proficient in all Microsoft and Outlook programs; highly proficient in Microsoft excel

  • Understanding of confidentiality within the HR and Payroll Department

  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills including the ability to articulate complex ideas in a simple manner

  • Ability to effectively communicate among all levels within the organization

Required Experience/Education/Training/Certifications:


  • Bachelor’s Degree in HR, Business or related field or equivalent experience

  • Minimum 5-7 years of successful experience in corporate human resources function with focus in specialized area such as benefits

  • Minimum 5-7 years of experience in managing leave of absences, FMLA, ADA, and reasonable accommodations.

Licenses, Certifications, etc.:

  • CBP and SPHR preferred
