Job Description

Laboratory Technician

Conducts chemical and physical testing to support qualitative / quantitative analysis for process monitoring, product studies, and quality control.  Responsibilities include analyzing substances to determine their chemical composition, testing material properties and welds, setting-up lab equipment, monitoring experiments, compiling technical data, and communicating results.  Manages the chemical and metallography laboratory environment, including the ordering of chemicals, routine maintenance of the equipment, and ensuring compliance to internal and customer standards.

Job Summary

  •  Performs regularly scheduled testing (daily, weekly, monthly) on controlled processes as detailed by internal procedures and specifications.  Must adhere to documented testing protocols and work instructions.
  •  Documents test results.  Responsible for reviewing and maintaining testing logs.  Works closely with the Process Engineer to analyze results and resolve testing conflicts.
  • Able to work in a collaborative environment with Operators, Production Supervisors, EH&S, and Engineers to communicate results and assist in resolving technical issues.
  • Monitor experiments to determine product quality and ensure testing is performed in compliance with relevant local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Maintains chemical and supply inventories, ordering chemicals and materials as necessary.
  • Assists in the design or fabrication of experimental apparatus to develop new processes or products.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment by cleaning, repairing faulty equipment as necessary, and/or requesting replacements.
  • Once trained, able to work independently to perform physical and chemical testing, maintain logs, and communicate results to the team.
  • Participates in safety programs, teams, or committees, and conducts regular safety audits to ensure a safe work environment.

Required Skills and Qualifications

§   Ability to read and follow technical procedures.

§   Ability to enter data into spreadsheets.

§   Team oriented with an understanding of Continuous Improvement initiatives.

§   Ability to use a variety of precision measuring tools and instruments.

§   Ability to read, understand, and edit Standard Operating Procedures.

§   Must be able to communicate effectively.

§   Must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

 

Required Experience and Education

§    Highly organized and detailed oriented with strong organizational and time management skills. 

§    Demonstrated ability to follow detailed instructions to produce testing results.  Able to focus for extended periods of time.

§    Course work or Associates degree in math, biology, chemistry, or physics a plus.
