Laser Operator

Laser Operator sets up and operates computer-numerical control (CNC) machine to cut and fabricate metallic parts.

Job Summary

  •  Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements
  • Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and references points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining
  • Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machine
  • Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed
  • Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required
  • Verifies conformance of finished work piece to specifications
  • Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.Confers with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining problems
  • Responsible for the proper handling and management of hazardous waste generated in their work area
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills & Qualifications

Required Skills & Qualifications  

  • Ability to use measuring instruments including but not limited to calipers, indicators, and scales.
  • Ability to operate a forklift.
  • Prior CNC operator experience helpful.
  • Read and understand internal procedures and policies.
  • Understand and follow through on both verbal and written instructions.
  • Team oriented with a continuous improvement outlook.
  •  
  • Basic Computer Skills - able to learn new screens, reports, functions and simple software programs with assistance.

Required Experience/Education/Training/Certifications   

  • High School Diploma; up to 3 years related experience in job function and/or training; equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Math Skills – decimals, percentages, fractions - geometry and trigonometry is a plus.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and mylars.
  • Prior CNC operator experience helpful.
  • Basic Computer Skills - able to learn new screens, reports, functions and simple software programs with assistance.

Work Environment and Safety Equipment Required  

  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively.
  • Frequently required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally required to sit, stoop, kneel or crouch.
  • Must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Working conditions are:  100% manufacturing environment.
  • Regularly required to work near moving mechanical parts.
  • Noise level is usually moderate.
  • Safety glasses (ANSI Z87 compliant) required in all manufacturing areas.
  • Safety Footwear shall be in accordance with the following: ASTM standard F2413-05 with minimum impact resistance, compression resistance and metatarsal designation ratings of 75 foot pounds (i.e. ASTM F2413-05 I/75 C/75 Mt/75), which are viewable on the inside tag of footwear.
