Job Summary & Essential Functions:  The following describes in general terms the purpose and scope of the position.

This position is responsible for reading and interpreting customer drawings, specifications and/or model based definitions (MBD) and creating tool designs to best meet these requirements.  Additionally, the tool design engineer will serve as a technical resource available to manufacturing concerning tool usage, tool improvements, and other special projects.  Work cooperatively as a member of an Integrated Product Team that includes Business Management, Project and Manufacturing Engineering, Supply Chain and Quality personnel.

Job Summary

•Studies and is knowledgeable on specifications, engineering blueprints, model based definitions, tool orders and shop data and confers with engineering and shop personnel to resolve design problems related to material characteristics, dimensional tolerances, service requirements, manufacturing procedures and cost.
•Reviews all requests for new tools from the shop floor as well as requests for tooling repairs or modifications. Determines necessary course of action.  Initiates a Tool Order to address the request including related instructions, sketches and engineering drawings/information.
•Works with the Tooling/Machining work center or outside contractor to resolve conflicts or issues that may arise as a result of performing tool manufacturing, repairs or modifications.
•Works with Supply Chain to outsource tooling fabrication, repairs or modifications that are beyond DAS NY’s capacity or abilities.
•Addresses shop floor producibility issues, especially those where poor or faulty tooling may be the root cause.
•Works with engineering staff to determine and design new tooling requirements and provide input to manufacturing concept.
•Provides MBD designs, sketches, drawings and support as needed to Manufacturing Engineers, Tooling/Machining and/or outside contractors regarding manufacture of new tooling.
•Process expert in manufacturing processes, including, but not limited to Machining, Forming, Welding and Assembly.
•Understands Cartesian coordinate systems and general Aircraft structures.
•Ability to perform Reverse Engineering Functions utilizing any data available.
•Resource in Estimate process to define work process.
•Participate in the development or implementation of new or nontraditional manufacturing technologies.
•Responsible for the proper handling and management of hazardous waste generated in their work area.
•Must be willing and able to work overtime as necessary.
•Acceptable attendance is an essential function of the position.
•Performs other duties as assigned or required by the position.

•Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
•Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. 
•Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
•While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel.  The employee frequently is required to stand, walk or sit.  
•Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
•Must be able to communicate effectively. 
•Annual baseline hearing test is required.
•Must be able to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.

Required Experience and Education

To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess the outlined experience level, education, training, minimum years of experience, product or industry knowledge plus any certifications in order to be considered.

•Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university is required.
•Five (5) years’ experience in a tooling/machining environment in the sheet metal industry.
•CATIA experience is desired.

Work Environment and Safety Equipment Required:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job.  Safety glasses, safety shoes and other designated personal protective equipment as required for the position.

•Working conditions are:  80% office and 20% manufacturing environment.
•While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme heat; and risk of electrical shock.  
•The noise level in the work environment is moderate and occasionally loud.
•Hearing protection is required in designated areas.
•Safety glasses (ANSI Z87 compliant) required in all manufacturing areas.
•Fully enclosed shoes of solid, leather construction with a steel or composite toe cap (ANSI Z41 compliant) must be worn in all manufacturing areas.

This is a generic job posting for a Tool Design Engineer.  Depending on the candidate’s skills, qualifications and experience, they will be hired into an entry (I) level, intermediate (II) level or expert (III) level job and pay scale.

Base Compensation: USD 65,546.00 - 81,939.00 Paid Salaried
