Mechanical Engineering Manager

The Ducommun Performance Center in Carson, CA is the Engineered Products Group site for our Human Machine Interface, Motion Control Device, and Radio Frequency (RF) product lines. Our products are found on the surface of Mars, in downhole drilling, on military fighter jets, and on naval submarines. The Mechanical Engineering Manager pulls together the mechanical engineering functional team across all product lines, driving best practices into all that we do. This role is key for ensuring that product designs are well thought out, well documented, and highly producible.

The Mechanical Engineering department is responsible for mechanical design, drawings, structural analysis, and requirements review. The Engineering Manager develops and documents best practices for each discipline area, continuously improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the department.

The Engineering Manager is responsible for developing department capabilities to support business needs, including employee development and continuous improvement of facilities, equipment, and software.

A key aspect of this role is the balance of managerial responsibilities with individual contribution to the development of new products and sustainment of existing products.

 Job Summary

  • Leads the Mechanical Engineering team consisting of mechanical engineers and mechanical designers.
  • Drives harmonization of the Engineering Change Order (ECO) and Change Control Board (CCB) processes across product lines, improving ECO turn around time and review process effectiveness through procedure standardization.
  • Individually contributes to the development of new products and the sustainment of existing products through background in mechanical engineering. Creates complete, clear, accurate mechanical models and drawings using SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
  • Drives adoption of Model-Based Definition (MBD) into design, fabrication, and inspection workflows.
  • Tracks progress on key projects and initiatives to ensure top quality internal and external customer support.
  • Cross-functionally interacts to coordinate plans and achieve results.
  • Interfaces directly with customers to capture requirements, conduct design reviews and technical interchange meetings, and respond to customer support inquiries.
  • Promotes individual and team training to ensure staff are ready to support initiatives and projects.
  • Drives employee performance, development, hiring, and staffing projections.
  • Reviews and makes recommendations on policies and procedures to maximize department performance, authoring new policies and procedures as appropriate.
  • Manages fiscal responsibility for department, forecasting future requirements and managing expenses within established budget.
  • Any other responsibilities as assigned.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Experience in Aerospace and/or Defense industries.Experience in a manufacturing environment is a plus.
  • SolidWorks expertise required; AutoCAD a plus. Prefer formal SolidWorks certification such as CSWP or CSWE - Mechanical Design.
  • Experience with product design and development within a stage-gate process.
  • Understanding of AS9100 Rev C and ISO 9000 is preferred.
  • Clear communication skills.
  • U.S. Person status.

Required Experience and Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
  • Minimum 5-7 years progressive experience
  • Two (2) or more years of experience leading or managing engineering teams, which can include project management and/or project engineering
