Job Description

Direct, instruct, and provide support for shipping staff under the guidance of the supervisor in addition to performing shipping and receiving duties. Review customer orders for packaging requirements and plans for fulfillment of these requirements. Verify and keep records on incoming shipments and prepare items for shipment.  Receive shipments from customers and suppliers then inspect for damage and verify quantities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  Direct, instruct, and provide support for shipping staff under the guidance of the supervisor. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

Leadership
Assign work within the area of responsibility based on information from various sources
Coordinate activities to ensure tasks are completed on schedule in a cost effective manner
Ensure personnel utilize equipment and material that are in compliance for calibration, maintenance and material expiration dates
Ensure personnel comply with SOX, ISO, Inventory, and Human Resources policies
Assist in effective direction and coordination within the assigned area to ensure the output meets published workmanship standards and employees are working in accordance with documented instructions
Provide feedback to employees on quality-related issues

Shipping
Identifies and plans for shipment of customer orders to meet the customer requirements for packaging and preservation
Manages shipping costs to keep overall costs within budget
Determines preservation method of shipment and carrier
Compares identifying information and counts, weighs, or measures items of incoming and outgoing shipments to verify information against bills of lading, invoices, orders, or other records
Assembles wooden or cardboard containers or selects pre-assembled containers
Stamps, stencils, or glues identifying information and shipping instructions onto crate or containers
Prepares and affixes shipping labels on packed cartons or stencils identifying shipping information on cartons
Maintains inventory of shipping materials and supplies
Makes arrangements with shipping companies for the pickup and drop off of any type of items being shipped or received
Makes special arrangements if needed for expedited shipments or receipts

Receiving
Unpacks and examines incoming shipment, rejects damaged items, records shortages, and corresponds with shipper to rectify damages and shortages
May operate or use a hand truck, pallet jack or forklift to move, convey, or hoist shipments from the shipping and receiving department to storage, or other work areas
Determine proper storage methods, identification, and stock location based on turnover, environmental factors, and physical capabilities of facilities
Store items in an orderly and accessible manner in warehouses, tool rooms, supply rooms, or other work areas
Maintain the machines, systems and work area with which their duties are performed
Perform 5S duties on a daily basis for organization, safety and cleanliness
Train other employees in shipping receiving tasks and procedures when required
Maintain work instructions when needed to create consistent work flow and standard work
Perform other duties as assigned in support of the company and fellow employees.

Skills & Qualifications

Intermediate level computer proficiency including e-mail, Word, and Excel

Education and/or Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); associates degree preferred.
3-5 years of experience in a supervisory position in a manufacturing environment
