The Sr. Lead Engineer will manage new product development and sustaining projects by leading the engineering and research/development teams. Manage all project related activities from concept to design of prototype through to transfer into Manufacturing. Ensure cross-company communication to facilitate project completion on time and within budget. Work with the teams to identify and improve process and project efficiencies.

Some of the specific duties include:

  • Manage new product development projects by leading the R&D and engineering teams in a matrix structure.
  • Work with Product Management to define top level customer and market requirements.
  • Work with multi-disciplinary engineering teams to develop functional requirements and specifications, work-break-down structures, schedules, and engineering work packages to be executed by either internal or external resources.
  • Manage 3rd party design/development firms and define work packages between internal and external organizations to accomplish system level performance and cost goals.
  • Establish budgets for new product development projects working with internal Finance personnel.
  • Work with Engineering, Product Management, Operations, Supply Chain, Customer Service, and Quality to define resource plans and task durations to develop overall project schedules.
  • Report/present project status to senior management on a regular basis.
  • Assume accountability for project success.
  • Ability to create and sustain an environment that promotes good communication and candid feedback.
  • Enlists and gains widespread internal support for change.
  • Recommends machinery and automation to ensure the predictability of production parts and elimination of waste.
  • Negotiate critical and complex issues with 3rd party design partners.

Skills & Qualifications

Required Skills & Qualifications: 

  • Must have an extensive working knowledge of advanced composites production (resin transfer molding) operations, automated & conventional material placement technology, applicable tooling/fixtures conceptualization and design, tooling fabrication, machining operations, autoclave / oven processes and quality control procedures
  • Must be able to read, write and edit technical reports / blueprints / drawings / work orders including the preparation of tables, graphs and figures using PC software

•         Must have strong analytical and communication skills

  • Will be a team oriented individual with a continuous improvement (lean, Six Sigma) problem solving background
  • Must have excellent proficiency in MS Office applications (Visio, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.)
  • Must have strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask
  • Excellent communication skills with aptitude for problem solving

  • Must have strong statistical and mathematic skills

•         Must have prior experience in a composite manufacturing environment; preferably from automotive, aerospace and /or defense environments with resin transfer molding (RTM) processes

•         Must be willing and able to be hands-on during the development process, working alongside technicians and the technical staff

Required Experience/Education/Training/Certifications:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess the outlined experience level, education, training, minimum years of experience, product or industry knowledge plus any certifications in order to be considered.  List in bullet fashion what they must possess.

  • B.S. Engineering or related discipline (Mechanical, Electrical, Materials)
  • Minimum 5 years of project or program management experience with demonstrated ability to drive project management results and continuous improvement.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in Engineering/new product development in the industrial/manufacturing Capital Equipment sector, preferably in advanced composite materials (preferably RTM) within a lean, aerospace manufacturing environment.
